The frame accounts for 80% of a tent's quality.
People tend to focus on the tarpaulin, but the frame determines whether the tent can withstand wind and snow. Two common aluminium alloy grades are available on the market: 6063 and 6061. 6061-T6 is more suitable for tents, as it offers higher strength and good welding performance. It also has excellent corrosion resistance after anodizing or powder coating treatment.
Ask your supplier about the wall thickness of the profiles. For a tent with a 10-metre span, the minimum safe wall thickness for the main beams is 2.5 millimetres. If you receive a quotation for a 20-metre span tent with only 1.5-millimetre wall thickness, reject it outright. It will bend and deform at the first heavy snowfall.
Do not overlook the tent fabric.
PVC-coated polyester fabric is the standard material for high-quality tents, with a recommended weight range of 650 grams per square metre to 850 grams per square metre. Tent fabric weighing less than 600 grams per square metre will stretch, deform and fade within one or two years; fabric over 850 grams per square metre is heavy and more costly, and should not be selected unless there are genuine special requirements.
Fire rating is equally important. Many countries require event tents to meet fire standards such as B1, M2 or NFPA 701. Remember to request test reports. Suppliers unable to provide reports are not worth cooperating with.
Span and Length: Two Parameters That Change Everything
A 3m × 3m tent is a simple pop-up tent; in contrast, a 20m × 40m tent is comparable to a building, and the structural designs required for the two are entirely different.
For warehousing applications, spans of 10 to 20 meters are commonly used to create open spaces free of internal support columns. For event scenarios, spans ranging from 5 to 15 meters are ideal for setting up stages, dining areas and exhibition halls. If the required span exceeds 30 meters, the project falls under custom engineering. It is essential to verify that the supplier employs full-time engineers, rather than merely sales staff with product catalogs.
Installation: Plan Ground Conditions in Advance
Most people only consider anchoring after the tent arrives. If drilling into concrete is permitted, expansion bolts offer good cost performance and reliable fixation. For grass or asphalt surfaces, ground anchors or concrete counterweights are required. Counterweight blocks are generally selected for rental events.
Also take installation time into consideration. It takes a professional team approximately 4–6 hours to set up a 10 m × 20 m tent; installation time will double if you do it yourself. Remember to ask for installation manuals or tutorial videos before purchase.
Customization Options: Which Modifications Are Truly Feasible
Nearly all components of the tent can be customized, yet customization will affect costs and lead times. Common customization options include:
Colors: white, beige, red, purple, or custom colors based on Pantone codes.
Logos: printed directly on the PVC fabric, or produced as separate banners.
Doors and windows: clear PVC windows, roller shutters, or glass walls for an upgraded texture.
Temperature control accessories: insulated liners, air conditioning ports and heating ducts.
Floor systems: wooden flooring, carpets, and aluminum flooring.
