Liansheng Aluminum: The "no cut corners" philosophy for tent frame profiles

Whether a tent can withstand a force 10 wind does not depend on the fabric, but on those fractions of a millimeter barely visible to the naked eye.

Hidden pitfalls in tent procurement

Anyone purchasing tents has most likely encountered this scenario: quotation sheets from three suppliers laid out on the table. For the same 500-square-meter prefabricated tent, total prices range from over 100,000 to more than 400,000. The appearance photos look identical and the cross-sectional dimensions of the profiles are similar. Where lies the difference?

The difference lies in the wall thickness of aluminum alloy profiles.

National standards require that the wall thickness of main load-bearing components of canopy structures shall be no less than 1.4 millimeters. However, many products on the market use profiles of 1.0 millimeters or even 0.8 millimeters, with no visible difference in appearance. When the wall thickness is reduced from 1.4 millimeters to 1.0 millimeters, the compressive bearing capacity drops by more than 30%. There may be no issues under normal conditions, but in extreme weather such as typhoons and heavy snow, this 30% gap marks the dividing line between safety and accidents.

More insidiously, some manufacturers list the "maximum dimension" as the wall thickness on specification sheets, while the vast majority of cross-sections of the actually delivered products fail to meet the nominal thickness. If purchasers do not request factory test reports or specify exact values in contracts, it will be nearly impossible to hold the suppliers accountable afterwards.

Why are marquee tents particularly sensitive to wall thickness

A marquee tent is essentially a column-free long-span temporary building. It covers spans ranging from 5 to 60 metres with no internal columns. All loads are borne by aluminium alloy beams and uprights. This means the section moment of inertia and wall thickness of the profiles directly determine the deformation of the entire structure under wind and snow loads.

One often overlooked rule is that there is a rigid correlation between span length and profile wall thickness. For spans between 8 and 12 metres, 6061-T6 aluminium alloy main uprights with a wall thickness of 1.4 mm can generally meet conventional warehousing load requirements. For spans from 12 to 20 metres, the wall thickness needs to be increased to 1.6–2.0 mm, and the spacing between uprights should be reduced accordingly; otherwise, mid-span deflection will exceed the standard limit. Large-scale marquee tent projects impose stricter requirements on wall thickness. Some tender documents specify that the wall thickness of main profiles shall be no less than 5 mm, with tensile strength no lower than 260 MPa and yield strength no lower than 240 MPa.

These figures are not arbitrarily decided by design institute staff sitting in offices. After every extreme weather event, professionals in the industry review the causes of accidents, and insufficient wall thickness is almost always on the list.

Liansheng's approach: Treat the nominal wall thickness as the bottom line, not the target.

Suzhou Liansheng Aluminum Industry was founded in 2007. Its main business covers aluminum alloy trusses, stage lighting frames, and various activity tents of different sizes including exhibition tents, wedding banquet tents and auto show tents. Its products adopt 6-series high-strength aluminum alloy. In the production of tent profiles, Liansheng is confronted with an open "grey area" in the aluminum extrusion industry.

Aluminum extrusion has a process characteristic: profiles produced by newly used dies have wall thickness close to the lower limit. As the die wears, the wall thickness gradually increases. If manufacturers set the die according to "negative tolerance", the wall thickness of profiles from new dies may be far lower than the nominal value. The wall thickness will only "return to normal" after the die wears to a certain extent. This means for the same batch of orders, the first several shipments may be a few tenths of a millimeter thinner than the later ones, while purchasers usually only conduct spot checks on a few pieces during acceptance inspection.

Liansheng’s solution is to reserve positive allowances during mold design and extrusion processes, ensuring that the actual wall thickness of profiles remains no less than the nominal value throughout the entire mold service life. While this may seem merely a choice of process parameters, it carries tangible costs: a little more aluminum is consumed for each profile, pushing up raw material costs and reducing material yield. For aluminum profile manufacturers with output measured in tons, this represents a direct sacrifice of profits.

Another benefit of stable wall thickness lies in the on-site assembly experience of marquees. Profiles with large wall thickness fluctuations are prone to dimensional deviations during cutting, drilling and fitting of connectors. Minor deviations require on-site trimming, while severe ones render an entire batch of components non-interchangeable. For mobile marquees that need repeated disassembly, assembly and relocation, component interchangeability directly affects reuse efficiency and operating costs.

Not every project requires the thickest profiles

It should be noted that "no thickness reduction" does not mean "the thicker the better". Profile requirements vary greatly across application scenarios: 6061-T6 profiles with a main column wall thickness of 1.4 mm are sufficient for standard mobile marquees with a span within 8 meters. For large storage marquees with spans over 12 meters or projects subject to heavy snow loads, wall thickness needs to be increased accordingly. Liansheng determines profile specifications based on customers’ actual application scenarios and structural calculation results, instead of simply applying the same cross-section to all orders.

For buyers, there is a simple test to determine whether a supplier truly delivers the stated wall thickness without cutting corners: ask the supplier to provide the factory test report for the aluminum alloy profiles. The report should include the actual measured wall thickness values and material test data. Suppliers who are willing to clearly specify the exact wall thickness of the main columns in black and white in the contract will generally not skimp on materials.

Maintaining full wall thickness without reduction is the fundamental principle of Liansheng Aluminum Industry when manufacturing tent profiles. This standard may be invisible, yet every tent standing against the wind speaks for it.
